Greetings, I am looking forward to sharing with you my journey to health and vitality by using specific yoga techniques, mindfulness practices, foods and exercises. More to come!
Below I briefly describe my healthy journey that lead me to find all of the best practices to maintain a health and strong immune system and body.
My health journey
From the young age of 6, I suffered from migraines daily. Extricating pain, migraines of every sort (intense pain in my head, clustered, throbbing, body migraines, clenched jaw and sore muscles, you name it!) and would often have to stay in bed without any lights, I could not watch anything and noise would make it worse. And if you can imagine, yes even at the age of 6, the doctors in the emergency ward would give me strong drugs like morphine – and I went to the hospital at least once a month. At 11 years old, doctors started to prescribe me strong drugs that I was told to take every 4-6 hours. They never worked, but I continued to take them in the hope that they would, until one day, I gave them to one of my friend’s mother who was in bed with a migraine for 2 days. After taking just 1/4 of the dose I normally took, she was out of bed within 30 minutes! I stopped taking the drugs as of that day.
Honestly, the only thing that helped me was trial and error, and learning things by chance. But for the most part, I learned to live with the pain, accepted that pain was part of my life and just carried on. At the age of 11, the naturopath found that I was intolerant to a lot of foods – but since it was such a foreign idea that food could cause health issues back them, my parents did not thing about it. I went to the chiropractor regularly, and despite their best efforts, nothing worked. At the age of 17, I tried this therapy called the ‘black box’, where I had these electrodes attached to my temples that gave me a little tingle when I thought about everything that stressed me out. This is when I made the connection between stress and my migraines. In my 20s I started yoga and changed my eating habits (low carb diet, increased my vegetables, drank lots of herbal teas, ate less gluten free) and within a short period of time, my migraines disappeared. I now only get them occasionally. It wasn’t until my late 20s when it became a necessity to avoid any gluten as it would create a similar effect as food poisoning.
Now, since 2016, I had to change my eating habits again! These changes were more painful than gluten free, because now I cannot eat corn, potatoes, most grains, dairy, soy, pea protein, eggs, sulfites, MSG, and chocolate! Do you know how many things contain corn? and sulfites? Essentially almost anything prepared in cans, jars and boxes. It took me several years to adjust to my new diet, and had to learn new ways to flavor my food and satisfy my insatiable sweet tooth.
What happens if I make a mistake (intentional or unintentional)? Well I suffer from a variety of health conditions, ranging from eczema, aching bones and muscles for days, chronic fatigue, low energy and some foods make me go to sleep instantly. And sometimes it only takes a small amount to do the damage, and many days of taking care of myself with lots of supplements and superfoods to get myself back to baseline.
I will share some of my best advice, recipes and tips on how to enjoy food again, and most importantly, if you are suffering from health conditions due to food – to feel great again!
